1. Brief Introduction of RCI

Responsible Cobalt Initiative (RCI) is a multi-stakeholder alliance organization initially proposed by up-stream and down-stream enterprises of global cobalt supply chain and relative institutes. It sticks to the principle of “equality, development, tolerance and transparency”, systematically identifies and responds to the social and environmental risks in the cobalt supply chain,and provides corporate risk awareness and responsible governance capabilities in order to mitigate negative impacts by the supply and trade of cobalt,and improve the livelihood of affected communities.
2. Three goals of RCI
Target 1:The upstream and downstream enterprises participating in the initiative agree with CCCMC and OECD Due Diligence guidelines, and gradually improve the transparency of supply chain and improve supply chain management according to the requirements of the guidelines;
The upstream and downstream enterprises of the initiative agree on the principles and due diligence methods in Chinese Due Diligence Guidelines for Responsible Mineral Supply Chains and OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas. Through the five-step framework, the awareness of due diligence for RCI members will be enhanced, and the transparency of the supply chain will be improved, and efforts will be made to build a responsible global cobalt supply chain. The initiative's services and enterprise initiatives will focus on tool development, including upstream and downstream supply chain risk assessment tools, audit tools, risk mitigation and resolution tools, while encouraging companies to release due diligence reports.
Target 2: Taking action in DRC to address negative impacts (including child labour, health and safety), based on risk identification, in collaboration with the DRC government, affected stakeholders (e.g. children and youth) and local civil society;
Promote cooperation with local governments, local communities, international development agencies, international organizations, academic institutions and non-governmental organizations, including:
(1) Take action in local communities, such as the DRC, to address the risks and negative impacts in the cobalt supply chain.
(2) Train local operators and stakeholders to integrate local participators into global value chain specialization.
